Thanksgiving 2013

My parents and Colin came to visit us this Thanksgiving.  So nice to have family in town.  My kids wanted to know where Victor and I were going when Grandma and Papa got here.  Ha!  No where this time kiddos.  (The last two times they visited we were gone - hospital in August and Charleston in March).

Here are some photos of our weekend so far...

 Story time
 Puzzle time
New toys we bought from a neighbor that's outgrown them
 Sweet, sweet baby
 It's a tough life

Dad suggested to me a few weeks ago that he, Victor, and Colin
would cook Thanksgiving dinner while Mom and I went to the spa.
I tried to arrange massages but the local salon was booked this weekend.
So no spa but we did go to the gym together and had a restful day.
Dad it seems liked the supervisor role.
Colin made the turkey, gravy, and soup (for lunch).
Victor did the rest of dinner - cinnamon roles, brownies, brocolli,
mac and cheese, and scalloped potatoes.
Apparently, I need to get the guy in the kitchen more often!
Dad did do all the dishes this weekend.

Dinner was disrupted by a bloody tooth!
After a little wiggling, Erik lost tooth #1.
His two front bottom adult teeth are already in, so I 'm glad
one of the baby teeth is finally out!
The other front tooth isn't loose at all.
We will continue to call him Mr. Shark until he no longer has
two rows of visible teeth.
 Post-dinner Starwars monopoly
Erik is a happy boy!
We also skyped with Daron and Feifei
and wish they and Kevin could be here too!

I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving!

Kyle - 3 Months!

Can you believe our little baby is already 3 months old?!  Not a newborn anymore I guess.

Kyle is a fantastic baby!  He is an amazing sleeper.  I was very convinced he would have reflux too, since all the others did, but he does not.  No reflux = baby sleeping in his crib at 2.5 months for 8-9 hours in a row.   Completely amazing!  For the past 2 weeks he has been going to bed at 6:30 and sleeping most nights until 2:30 or so.   The feeding session takes about 30 minutes but he goes back down, usually awake without fussing, and gets up again around 6:00.  He sleeps so well I actually miss him! He also has a bald spot. Ha!  The other kiddos were all sleeping on Victor's chest or in their bouncy chair still at this point.

Kyle is a very content little guy.  He wakes up in the morning happy as a clam and just smiles and coos for about 30 minutes.  I love it!  He likes to be held a lot.  If he is awake, he would prefer to be in our arms.   He still likes his "plug" but doesn't need it as much.   He's not quite as happy as Carson was (hard to beat that!) but overall if laid back and content.

He loves to watch everything and tracks well.  The kids find this quite funny because he turns his head watching them run back and forth across the room.  It's cute.  He rolls over from front to back fairly often and has good head control.   He still had dark blue-gray eyes.  He has new hair growing in which appears to be very dark brown.

He nurses well and eats every 2-3 hours during the day, and once at night.  He weighs 13 pounds.   I had mastitis earlier this month, right after he started sleeping better.  It's resolved quickly thankfully!

I am so so grateful for our little guy!  He is a wonderful addition to our family!

8 years and giving thanks

Victor and I were engaged on 5/5/5.  We got married on Thanksgiving weekend (11/26/05) because my mom was teaching and had very limited time off during the school year. Since we were living in Wisconsin and had many family members traveling hundreds of miles to get to the wedding,  December through March were not good choices.  Spring break was the next good option but that Saturday just happened to be April Fools Day!  Ha!  So Thanksgiving weekend it was and we had a really fun wedding.

Anyway, this year the closeness of Thanksgiving and our anniversary, both days set aside to give thanks (hopefully), seem to leave me feeling quite reflective.

My life is so good.   In fact, almost everyone I spend time with on a regular basis, has a really good life.  Nice homes, reliable cars, stable jobs (although most were furloughed in some way recently), healthy kids, financial security, steady marriages, etc.   In fact, there has been an article floating around facebook this week about how the DC area is extremely affluent (a superzip).  ( Click here to read... http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/local/2013/11/09/washington-a-world-apart/).  Of course, if you get on the wrong metro train you will quickly know that lots of people in DC live in extreme poverty.

Despite this abundance of blessings bestowed upon my home and that of many of my friends and family, it somehow seems human nature to focus of the things you don't have/things that annoy you (messy house, not enough sleep, sassy kids, un-perfect spouse, old cars, not enough time by yourself or with your spouse, etc.).   It's normal I think to be annoyed with little things at times but sad if the major joy that life holds is lost by focusing on the wrong things.

I've always been fairly optimistic but I am also quite neurotic (still working on that!).  So to not get focused on the small, unimportant things that might drive me bonkers and steal some joy from my life (and those who may be annoying me and hearing about it) is something I have to work at daily.

How do we lose track so easily?  I don't know.  I do know though that for past two years it's been much easier for me to see the joy in the mundane.  To remember to stop and be grateful for the little things.  My life is so good and I honestly wake up happy and thankful 95% of the time.

You see,  as most readers know, my brother was been fighting cancer for 2 years.  Every day he has to fight a battle just to see another day.  This battle has been and continues to be really, really hard.  His life has been halted in every aspect.  I can't say anything good about cancer and I wish with every fiber in my body that his struggles would never have happened and he would be miraculously cured.

That being said, watching Daron fight has taught me a lot about giving thanks.   He's amazing (as is his wife).  Despite his daily pain and suffering he chooses to enjoy life whenever possible. My life is so good and easy and blessed.  I want to live a thankful life, not just during the week of Thanksgiving, everyday.

Back to my anniversary.  Today was a fairly ordinary day.  I was woken at 6:01 to Kyle's cries over the monitor.  Victor had already left for work.  All four kids were up already, Lainey was actually in the crib with Kyle - little stinker!  I started the day, after feeding Kyle, by doing laundry, unloading the dishwasher, feeding the other three, helping kids get dressed, packing backpacks, snacks and lunches, changing diapers (lots of them), cleaning up the kitchen.  At 8 o'clock our neighbor kiddos who are currently "homeless" came over to play for 30 minutes before going to the bus.  Our contractor Tim also showed up and had multiple questions for me regarding a locker project in the garage that he was going to work on today.  At 8:30 six kids and I headed to the bus stop in the wind, rain, and cold.   I was back home by 9:00, fed Kyle, changed another diaper, gathered up library books.  Then Kyle, Carson and I ran an anniversary errand and headed to the library.  (Does anyone with small kids manage to not owe large sums of money to the library on a regular basis?!) We picked up Lainey at school at 11:40.  She was mad that I picked her up and refused to come with me.  Apparently she wanted to ride the bus.  (I had to laugh because I distinctly recall doing the same thing to my mom at least once.)  I took the kids out for lunch and then we came home for naps.    Lainey was acting quite tired so I read her books and had her lay down for an hour.  Carson was next - he didn't sleep very well - but stayed in his room for 45 minutes.  I think I fed Kyle again and then started in on dinner.  Yes, at 1:30.  Nap time is the best time to make dinner and avoid chaos later in the day.   Between 2:30 and 4:00 I worked on a counting project and sight words with Lainey,  read more books to Carson and had him do a breathing treatment.   Erik got home shortly after 4:00 (my neighbors picked him up so I got to avoid the wind and rain in the afternoon).   I chatted with him for a while and fed Kyle again.  The trio played downstairs for a bit, while I got Kyle settled down for a nap, and warmed up dinner.  We eat early because Erik is starving when he gets home most days and I don't like giving them a snack at 4:30.  So by 5:00 the kids and I were eating dinner.   After getting the dinner dishes cleaned up or at least organized and the counters wiped down, I played hide and seek with the kids.  At 6:00 Victor got home.  We said hi.  While I was feeding Kyle (see a theme) we exchanged anniversary gifts quickly.  I then ran to the gym while Victor put the trio to bed and finished kitchen clean up.  After getting home from the gym, I chatted with Victor for a little bit before heading upstairs to write, take a shower, feed Kyle, and go to bed.

Lots of mundane moments on our 8th anniversary but truly I can think of no place I'd rather be.  When I got married 8 years ago, this was exactly the life I hoped I'd be living.  I'm so grateful those hopes and dreams came true.  Not everyone is so lucky.

I'm sharing this today to encourage those reading it, to never lose sight of the many blessings in your life.  Life's not easy.  Marriage is not easy.  But choosing to give thanks and seek joy really seems to be the best option no matter the circumstance.  I hope when I look back on my life, I will see that I have done that well.

Top Dog - Erik

Erik's school calls the student of the month "top dog".  Erik was picked as top dog in his class for the month of October.   Every month the top dogs get to eat breakfast with the principal.  Erik's breakfast was a week ago.  Victor was out of town and the cleaners were coming that morning.  I needed to get myself showered and dressed, all 4 kids dressed and ready, plus leave the house completely picked up all by 8:15 that day.  That's stretching my abilities.  So we got to the top dog ceremony at 8:34 (it started at 8:30).  They must have had more attendees than expected (families are invited) because by the time we got there all of the breakfast was gone!

Not wanting to leave anyone out, the kids that missed out on breakfast (apples, donuts, and juice) were called down to have breakfast in the principals conference room (instead of the cafeteria) after school started.    Guess it paid to be late that morning.  Ha!

Here are some photos of our top dog...

In the principals board room - hopefully the top dog ceremony will
be the only reason he ever has to be in there!

Top Dog was quite reluctant to have his photo taken

Good job Erik - we are proud of you!!

Kyle - Smiling for the camera

These are the best smiles I've been able to capture on the camera so far!
Kyle is a sweet, sweet little baby!
He is super smiley and chatty first thing in the morning which is fun to wake up too.
For the most part though he seems fairly serious and observant.
He very rarely fusses and if he is crying usually because he is hungry or tired, which is easily fixed.
He is sleeping in the crib now and for three nights only woke once between 8 pm and 6:30 AM.  That was great!  He was up twice again last night but still not too bad.
I'm still in shock that he doesn't need reflux meds and can lie down flat. Ha!

I'm so thankful for this sweet little baby!

Soccer Photos

The fall soccer season is over now.  It seemed to go on for a long time as the practices started at the end of August and the last game was mid-November.   It was fun though!  Erik started out the season a bit reluctant.  I think this was primarily due to his best bud James not liking soccer, therefore Erik didn't think he liked it anymore either.

Thankfully, his other best buddy Ricky was on his team this fall.  We also had the same coaches as last fall and they are great.  Erik quickly decided soccer was fun again once the season started.  He did a good job.  He understands the concept of the game quite well.  He is a really good runner and has great endurance throughout the game.  He is not quite aggressive enough but that's a skill all the kids are working on still.   He is a team player and doesn't seem to need to be in the spot light.  He is just as thrilled if his friend/teammate scores as he is when he scores a goal.

He wants to play indoor soccer this winter so I signed him up for a month of that.  We are on a break from soccer for about 6 weeks though which is nice.  I really do hope all of my kids find some physical activity that they enjoy as I think it's a good way to stay healthy and make friends.

Here are some fun photos from the season...

The little boy with the orange shin guards (Ricky) is a pretty amazing athlete!
Only once all season could any other team keep up with him!
He also a really nice little boy.  We are glad to be friends with his family.
He has very famous golfers in his family (Pat and Keegan Bradley) so we will see if
Ricky ends up in the hall of fame someday too.

Kyle the Guinea Pig

I love my kiddos. This morning I asked Lainey if she wanted to change Kyle's diaper. She was very excited to try!

Tonight I asked her if she wanted to try again. This time the boys wanted to participate. These are the hilarious results...

Sweet little baby is very patient!
 Try again kiddos!
Haha!

Shockingly, no one seemed interested in changing Carson's diaper!

After Kyle had a new diaper and change of clothes the kids decided he needed a check up.

Kyle can't decide if this is boring or scary.

Erik found a second stethoscope and joined in.
Lately, all three big kids think they are going to be doctors when
they grow up (particularly Lainey).
If Erik starts acting more interested in this profession I
will cheer as he's been fairly determined he wants to be a jet pilot for the past 2 years.
I'm hoping this desire fades as I'm certain he will be eliminated as a potential candidate
the second the Navy realizes he gets motions sick on 3 mile car rides.

All of the kids love having baby Kyle in our family.
Lainey is the most enamored and can hardly keep her hands off of him.
I am not a nervous nelly about letting the kids hold him but Lainey's comfort level
with her baby-care skills are significantly higher than mine.

Below she is holding him (12 pounds to her 35 pounds) and swinging
him (gently) through the air.  She most definitely thinks she's big enough to carry him around
She knows that is not allowed.
Thankfully she hasn't broken that rule.

She is really good with him though and is already
planning out her future babysitting services.

Upper Body Strength

Lainey has always had incredible upper body strength. I wonder if they still have to climb the rope for gym class? I could never get more than a foot or two off of the ground. She could probably zip right to the top. (Erik takes after me in this skill.)

Lainey - reading and story telling

Lainey has started to read a little bit. The other day she sat down and matched up 7 or 8 words with a corresponding picture without any help or direction. I had no idea she could do that. With Erik's report card we received a list of the 100 sight words he is supposed to know at the end of the year. He knows them all already. Out of curiousity I thought I'd check and see how many Lainey knew. She knows 31 of them, 9 months before she starts kindergarten. Watching kids learn to read is so fun! I suspect that Lainey will be a kid with her nose constantly in a book once the reading "clicks" in her brain. We'll see. I'm so thankful for my healthy babies. Here is a video of her telling us "Goldilocks and the 3 Bears" using puppets she made in school.

Happy Halloween/ Grandma Sandy

The last 4 days we've been super busy!

Thursday:  Halloween

This year we had two ninjas, a Cinderella, and Superman.  I am not a big fan of bringing tons and tons of candy into the house but don't want to be a total grinch either.  This year we let the kids eat 4 pieces of candy on Halloween night (I may or may not have participated in that myself).  They then were able to pick 10 pieces of candy each that we put in a very, very, very high place (so they can't raid it when I turn my back).  I've been letting them have about a piece a day.

Knowing I'd be tempted to raid their bags myself, Victor and I also selected 10 pieces.  The rest of the candy (think a HUGE bowl full) went back out to the doorstep for trick-or-treaters.  Surprise, surprise someone (likely a teenager) decided to take the entire stash.  If they hadn't I would have either tossed the extra or sent it to work with Victor.

That system has worked well for us.  I'm curious how long I can limit the candy without complaints.

Friday:  Grandma Sandy and Uncle Captain came into town

They stayed for the weekend.  It was a quick trip but nice to see them.  Captain lives in Taiwan so visits from him are quite limited.

Saturday:

Soccer game for Erik
7 mile run for me
Lunch at a local taco truck (yum - if you come visit we'll take you there)
Dinner with Grandma Sandy and Uncle Captain at Olive Garden
Drinks with some neighborhood friends after the kids went to bed

Sunday:

I've been singing at church recently.   This is fun but requires me to be at church from 700 AM until 12:15 PM on Sundays, plus Wednesday night rehearsal.  I don't mind that although the 700 AM arrival time is a bit painful when I get up at least twice a night at the moment.  :)

Sandy and Captain came to church with us and then headed to Williamsburg for some tourist activities.

Sunday afternoon was spent doing homework with Erik, running errands, getting groceries, going to the gym, etc.

Thankfully, I was able to stay home today and recover from our eventful weekend!
